Awards and recognition
Why present an Outstanding Educator Award?
The Outstanding Educator Award is offered by the Washington State PTA to recognize individuals who go beyond the normal expectations of their jobs to make the learning environment fun, beneficial, and challenging. The Emerald Park PTSA chooses to present an Outstanding Educator Award so we can officially recognize innovative individuals who directly influence the success of students at Emerald Park Elementary. The individual may do this from in the classroom or through other official contact with students. Nominees can include not only teachers but any faculty whether assistant, administrator, custodian or bus driver. Why present an Outstanding Volunteer (also known as Golden Acorn) Award? The Golden Acorn Award is offered by the Washington State PTA for recognition of a volunteer who has given outstanding service to all children in the school community… not just an individual. The Emerald Park PTSA chooses to present an Outstanding Volunteer award so we can recognize those who have given outstanding service to children in the Emerald Park community by donating their time to help in the classroom or school facility. It is to recognize volunteer service that goes “above and beyond”. |
Do you know a fantastic volunteer or educator? Let us know by filling out a nomination form and returning it to the school office by Friday, March 13, 2015!

Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff for taking time to nominate Outstanding Educators and Volunteers.
Congratulations to Mr. Martin as our Outstanding Educator this year! On top of doing an excellent job in the classroom year in, year out, he has also been working toward his National Boards. Way to go Mr. Martin! Thank you for your positive influence on so many young minds!
Like the Educator Award, we had many great nominees for the Volunteer Award. It was hard to choose just one, so this year (as happens at times) the Award goes to Peg Deister and Annette Wong. Thank you both for your tireless efforts in the classroom and on PTSA events and activities!
Gift cards were presented to all award winners and their names were added to the plaque in the school hallway. Thank you, Mr. Martin, Peg Deister and Annette Wong!

Outstanding Educator & Golden Acorn Award, 2011
The Emerald Park PTSA congratulated Kathy Britt as our 2011 Outstanding Educator and Jean McGhie and Fred & Claire Sturtevant, as the recipients of the 2011 Golden Acorn Award.
Before she retired, Kathy Britt was often the first person that many people saw when visiting Emerald Park. She had been with EP from the very start. Kathy, a most generous and caring person, approached students, staff, and volunteers in a professional and compassionate manner. Ms. Britt was responsible for coordinating the school calendar and assisted volunteers with her expertise. She also represented the Emerald Park staff by serving on the PTSA Board. Thank you, Ms. Britt!
Jean McGhie ran the popcorn program at Emerald Park for many years, organizing volunteers needed to run the program as well as ordering supplies. Jean had also been responsible for coordinating the emergency preparedness kits at our school. Jean volunteered at many events as well as in the classroom and chaperoned field trips. She will be missed around E.P. as her youngest went off to middle school. Thank you, Jean!
Fred & Claire Sturtevant were nominated for the Golden Acorn award by SEVEN teachers who wrote a very nice letter! The Sturtevants spent countless hours volunteering in their children’s classrooms over 10 years. They served as parent representatives on the Design Team, volunteered at the book fairs, ran the carnival, and attended many field trips. Fred & Claire showed their dedication to making education a valuable and fun experience for the students at Emerald Park. Their sense of humor kept our workroom fun and lively, and their ability to focus on details made the work they did in the classroom a huge help to both students and teachers. Thank you, Fred and Claire!
